What Are Functional Skills & How Do They Compare to GCSEs?

Functional Skills are practical English and Maths courses that help you build real-life skills - you can study Functional Skills as any age and they’re accepted by employers and universities just like GCSEs!

Here’s how the levels compare to GCSEs:

  • ☕(Mild) Entry Level 3 – This is a beginner level. It’s like starting from the basics and is great if you’re not quite ready for GCSE-level work.

(Below a GCSE Grade 1 or old Grade G).

  • 🌶️(Spicy) Level 1 – A step up! This is similar to GCSE Grades 1–3 (Old Grades G–D).

  • 🔥(Hot) Level 2 – This is the big one! It’s equal to a GCSE Grade 4 (which used to be a Grade C) and is accepted by most employers and universities.

Taking An Exam: Options and Advice

Exams Are Optional!

When you're 'Exam Ready', you can CHOOSE to take an exam OR move on to the next level. The goal is to reach the same standard as a GCSE pass!

You can take an online exam through the board linked to the course, which usually costs between £150 and £250, but taking an exam is completely optional—it’s your choice.

You can also shop around and check with local colleges about face-to-face exams, which might be cheaper or even free in some localities.

Feel free to explore your options and pick what works best for you.

🎯 Bonus Tip:
You can move onto GCSE courses at any point if you want!
